It was a five-yard gain on 2nd-and-5 that was just good enough to move the chains midway through the third quarter with the Chargers up 28-6.
Ninety minutes later, it was a play the media asked anyone and everyone about in the locker room.
The players were equally eager to talk about it.
After all, it was certainly noticeable to see Philip Rivers block the edge on a third down end-around, getting enough of Jamie Collins to free Keenan Allen for a first down.
While it may not have been the prettiest, it was effective. Most of all, it showed the kind of fiery passion and dedication the quarterback has as he’s willing to do whatever it takes to get the W.
“You see me using him on the lead block?!” Keenan Allen asked. “He’s a savage! The more you can do, man. That’s what it’s about in this league.”
Rivers wouldn’t go so far as to call it savage.
He was just trying to get enough of Collins, who didn’t make it any easier on him.
“I wanted him to just pick a side!” Rivers said. “He kept going in and out on me. I’m not very comfortable out there, but I was able to stay in front and not get a holding (penalty). That’s positive.”
“He’s always competing,” said Head Coach Anthony Lynn. “And that’s what we do. We always compete. He helped us get a first down right there, and that was a critical first down.”
Then the head coach gave the wry answer you’d expect after watching your future Hall of Fame quarterback mix it up with a physical linebacker.
“But I don’t want to see him do that too many times.”
At the same time, those in the locker room were quick to point out how appreciative they were to see Rivers willing to block on the edge like that.
“(That) lets me know he loves the game,” said Melvin Gordon. “He’s an unselfish player. Phil is a high energy guy that is going to do whatever it takes to win. On every snap and every down, he shows that.”
“That’s Phil,” added Tyrell Williams. “He’s competitive, and he’s going to stick his nose in there if he gets an opportunity. I’m not surprised at all.”
