AI breakthrough: Robot with shocking SUPERHUMAN movements completes obstacle course

Top scientists in the US have released a video of a human-like robot effortlessly scaling an obstacle course and leaping up large blocks.

Boston Dynamics have been working on their prize robot Atlas for several years, and in 2016 showed Atlas in a video walking, picking up boxes and righting itself.

But in the latest video, it's clear the robot has come on in leaps and bounds in just two short years.

The 30-second clip shows Atlas climbing steps 40cm (1.3ft) high and jumping over large logs with superhuman movement.

Demonstrating his parkour abilities, Atlas is also capable of standing up after falling over, running, and balancing on narrow objects.

Developers at Boston Dynamics said: "The control software uses the whole body including legs, arms and torso, to marshal the energy and strength for jumping over the log and leaping up the steps without breaking its pace."

Using computer vision technology, Atlas can "locate itself with respect to visible markers on the approach to hit the terrain accurately".

Boston Dynamics describe their prize robot as "the world's most dynamic humanoid".

Standing at 4ft 9in and weighing 165lbs, Atlas has 28 joints and can carry objects weighing up to 24lbs.

As well as stereo vision, range sensing and the ability to navigate rough terrain, it can do 180-degree jumps and perform backflips.

But many commenters warn Atlas marks the start of a terrifying robot takeover.

On the video, one wrote: "Boston Dynamics are basically creating the robots that will one day eradicate humankind."
