Fans of Grey's Anatomy might have still been in the process of getting to grips with Jackson Avery and Maggie Pierce's relationship, but Shondaland has gone and split them up anyway.

Yes, in yesterday's (October 4) episode of the medical drama, Jackson stunned his other half, co-workers and fans when he left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital without so much as a goodbye.

Viewers found out about Jesse Williams' apparent 'exit' from the series through Maggie, who told Meredith Grey that Jackson had left her a voicemail telling her he was taking "a step back" from his "whole life".

"He said he needed to go clear his head or unplug or whatever. He has some big questions and he needed some big answers. Is there something wrong with me?" Maggie pondered.

Of course, it's (hopefully) only a matter of time before Jackson returns to Grey Sloan to explain himself, but that didn't stop fans from venting their frustrations on Twitter.
