UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton didn’t start Saturday’s game against East Carolina, snapping the junior’s consecutive starts streak that spans 27 games.
He has led the UCF offense during every game of the Knights’ 19-game win streak, the longest unbeaten run in the country. The last game Milton missed also was against East Carolina in 2016.
Milton was banged up during the Knights’ 31-30 win over Memphis last week, leaving the field briefly in the fourth quarter but returning to finish the game against the Tigers. Milton told reporters Monday he tweaked his ankle after being flipped on his game-winning seven-yard touchdown run.
“My ankle kind of hurt more than anything for some odd reason but you know I think adrenaline at the moment then that I really didn’t feel anything,” Milton explained when questioned about the run.
Sophomore Darriel Mack Jr. earned his first career start after playing sparingly as Milton’s backup this season. Mack came into the game 4-of-9 passing for 24 yards this season. He had 110 yards on the ground, including a 70-yard touchdown run in the season opener against UConn.
Milton warmed up with the quarterbacks before kickoff and could still come off the bench against the Pirates.
